Paget's Disease

How is Paget’s disease diagnosed?

Paget’s disease may be diagnosed using one or more of the following tests:

  • X-rays -- Pagetic bone has a characteristic appearance on X-rays.
  • Alkaline phosphatase test -- An elevated level of alkaline phosphatase in the blood can be suggestive of Paget’s disease, but can be found in other conditions.
  • Bone scan -- Useful in determining the extent and activity of the condition. If a bone scan suggests Paget’s disease, the affected bone or bones should be x-rayed to confirm the diagnosis.

How is Paget’s disease treated?

The goal of treatment is to relieve bone pain and prevent the progression of the disease. In general, the therapies of choice are the more potent bisphosphonates.

What are the symptoms of Paget’s disease?

Because Paget’s disease comes on slowly many people do not know they have it.

If you have Paget’s disease the first warning sign may be pain in or over a bone.

  • The area may feel extra warm.
  • You may also feel tired.

If Paget’s disease affects the bones in a leg, the shape of the bone may change and your legs may bend or bow out. If it affects the skull, your head may get bigger. It can also cause you to have trouble hearing. Paget’s disease can cause your bones to break more easily. Often, Paget’s disease affects only one or two bones.
